Guides / Thin evidence
What does it mean when evidence is thin?
In brief
It means the report says so, in those words, instead of performing certainty. Three quotes get labeled as three quotes, and the finding shrinks to what they can carry. The silence itself is information: a name the public has never tested is a name where every account so far was written by the seller. A verdict built on three quotes would be fiction, and the label exists so no report ever has to write any.
What a thin report looks like#
Here is a live one, published by a witness, so you can hold it while you read this. Someone ran the refund promise of Jet Airways, an airline that stopped flying in 2019. The record shows its whole hand in one line: 5 community reports reviewed · Reddit 4 · Trustpilot 1
. And where a deep record prints a confidence grade, this one says pattern likely
. Five voices, counted as five voices, graded as a likelihood. No invented percentages. No “users report” standing on two users.

5 reports · Reddit 4, Trustpilot 1 · confidence: pattern likely · a thin record, labeled as one
For scale: the three records these guides cite elsewhere drew 56, 50, and 38 admissible reports, because millions of people live those promises every week. That density is the base rate, and against it, five reads as what it is. The engine treats its own silence as a fact to disclose rather than a gap to paper over.
The floor under all this is structural, and it costs us content. A published record under two admissible quotes marks itself out of the search index. This month a five-quote check on an AI writing tool sat below our own seeding bar and stayed unpublished. The alternative, padding thin records into confident ones, would work exactly once per reader.
Three ways to read silence#
The internet complains prolifically. That base rate is what makes a void meaningful: where testimony should be and is missing, one of three things is true, and they price differently.
The name is new. Nobody has lived the promise yet. You would be among the first, which means every description of the thing so far came from the people selling it. Quiet is a different thing from safe; here it means untested, and untested plus your money is a position you should at least know you hold.
The discussion lives somewhere unindexed. Enterprise software griped about in private Slacks, a regional service argued about in another language. The absence is in the record, and the record says which platforms it searched, so you can see the shape of where testimony could still be hiding.
The thing is genuinely fine. Boring products generate thin records: nobody writes 900 comments about a cable that works. This is the happiest reading, and the trend mechanism protects it: if pain starts, the next check finds it, and the record moves. So read today’s silence as a snapshot. Next quarter’s check can overturn it.
A thin report cannot tell you which of the three you are holding. It can tell you the question to ask next, which is more than a five-star average built from twelve invited reviews ever told anyone.
For contrast, here is what the other end of the scale looks like: a record where the testimony is deep enough to carry a hard finding, a stated trend, and a kept exception. The distance between these two shapes is the entire point of labeling.

The objection#
Sparse behavior and the thin floor match the shipping pipeline (fewer than two admissible quotes: the page carries a noindex and says so; one real 5-quote check was left unpublished this month under the seeding quality gate). Contrast record: 38 reports, author-signed.
